Description
Position DescriptionSeattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation's largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Over the years we have worked very hard to keep Seattle's electricity affordable, reliable, and environmentally sound. Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.
This is an excellent opportunity to join the Joint Use Wireline Engineering Team. As City Light utility pole managers, we are responsible for evaluating projects and designing work packages to adhere to NESC clearance requirements, civil and pole infrastructure, secondary systems, and services that comply with City Light Construction, Material, and Design Standards. We are looking for an energetic and effective team member who is interested in making a positive impact on our customers. This position will report to the Joint Use Wireline Supervisor at South Service Center.
Job Responsibilities
Here is more about what you'll be doing:
- Coordinates and reviews the work submitted by consultants and manufacturers on construction, fabrication, installation, and modifications of electrical systems to ensure minimum NESC clearances are achieved, and designs are completed in accordance with SCL Design/Construction/Material Standards.
- Complete pole analyses, field & design make ready work to ensure NESC compliance & adherence to SCL construction guidelines.
- Ensure the completion of complex, detailed engineering drawings, designs, and preparation of maps, plans, revisions, and schematics related to work initiated by the unit.
- Act in a lead engineer capacity to field questions from other engineers in the group.
- Work closely with supervisor to suggest, initiate, and complete special projects as needed where time allows.
- Provides instructions to field crews and answers questions about design issues.
- Communicate directly with both backhaul/fiber & wireless customers to address complications and provide advice over phone/email as well as on-site
- Update & provides progress reports to customers.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
In addition to the skills and experience mentioned below, a successful applicant will have experience that reflects a commitment to creating fair and equitable outcomes and has:
Requires two years electrical engineering experience, and an Associate Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology or two years of college level instruction in electrical engineering (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).
Work Environment/Physical Demands
- Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
- Field assignments may entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances, high voltage energized equipment and work in or near construction sites.
- May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
- May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
- Overnight travel may be required.
License, Certification and Other Requirements
Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility. This position may require the occasional driving of city vehicles.
Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:
- Experience managing projects related to electric utility distribution engineering design and construction.
- Well-developed coaching skills.
- Familiarity with pole surveying equipment and structural analysis software such as SpidaCalc/Studio.
- Knowledge of overhead and underground electrical distribution design and/or other related electrical service work
- Familiarity with NESC, CADD programs, WAMS, IKE4, and SCL Standards.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability and eagerness to learn and overcome new challenges.
- Ability to handle shifting and multiple priorities and to work as a team member in a diverse work force.
- Willingness to learn and accept responsibility, comply with safety rules and regulations, work efficiently, effectively and independently.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, property descriptions, construction schedules, contracts and other construction documents.
- Possess a Fundamentals of Engineering (formerly EIT) certificate.

The full salary range for this position is $53.60 to $62.40 per hour.
