Description
The University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Dental Public Health. This is a full-time faculty leadership appointment in the tenure stream at the associate professor or professor level, depending on qualifications. The Chair will lead a vibrant department committed to advancing oral health equity, community-based education, population health research, expanding access to care in rural and underserved communities, and evidence-based practice.
Position Overview
The Chair will provide strategic, academic, and administrative leadership for the Department of Dental Public Health, fostering excellence in teaching, research, service, and community engagement. The successful candidate will promote an inclusive and collaborative culture, guide faculty and staff development, manage departmental operations and budgets, and support innovation in public health-oriented dental education, research, and clinical programs. The Department of Dental Public Health houses the General Practice Residency (GPR) program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide visionary leadership aligned with the school's mission to improve oral and overall health through education, research, and service;
- Oversee and expand departmental programs in community-based education, implementation science, health services research, and workforce development;
- Provide support to the GPR program director who oversees the GPR program at Pitt Dental Medicine (Pittsburgh, PA), the program at the Regional Training Center (RTC) at Titusville, and the program at the RTC at Bradford, and future GPR programs located at additional RTCs;
- Strengthen partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies, Federally Qualified Health Centers, and community organizations across Pennsylvania and the Appalachian region;
- Engage in scholarship and mentor faculty in teaching and in securing extramural funding, including support from NIH, HRSA, and foundations;
- Advance curricular integration of population health, prevention, and health policy in predoctoral and residency programs; and
- Manage departmental resources, personnel, and strategic planning with transparency and fiscal accountability.
Qualifications - DDS/DMD or equivalent degree; advanced degree in public health or related field (MPH, DrPH, PhD) strongly preferred;
- Record of achievement in teaching, scholarship, and service commensurate with the rank of Associate Professor or Professor;
- Demonstrated leadership experience and success in fostering collaborative, interdisciplinary teams; and
- Evidence of extramural funding or capacity to develop sustainable research and outreach initiatives.
