Description
Plan and direct the development and maintenance of the main campus grounds. Lead staff to ensure coordinated maintenance of University grounds is properly performed in accordance with American Physical Plant Association (APPA) Grounds Service Level Guidelines.
Examples of Duties
Serve as Grounds Supervisor to include:-75%
- Conduct interviews for new hires and recommend new hires to Grounds Manager. Train personnel to ensure University grounds are well maintained. Supervise grounds maintenance employees performing landscaping duties. Provide hands-on training and direct supervision of grounds maintenance staff and temporary workers to ensure the proper maintenance of landscape equipment, plants, shrubs, trees, and flowers. Evaluate performance of employees. Recognize, identify, create proper solution, and direct personnel to ensure proper corrective controls of turf and ornamental diseases, weeds, and pests. Provide technical assistance to the grounds manager to ensure quality grounds maintenance for the University campus and to assist the Agriculture Department with special projects. Oversee work in progress to enforce safety policies and procedures. Coordinate units within grounds to ensure smooth collaboration on projects. Serve as a "Snow Team Leader" as required. Evaluate disciplinary situations in relation to the Memorandum of Understanding ( MOU ) and University policies and procedures, and issue disciplinary action. Manager on duty - within a rotation with other supervisors, serve as emergency contact person. Oversee employee's time on Kronos time keeping system to ensure accuracy and forward time to payroll services each pay period.
- Select plants, shrubs, trees, and flowers for beds and perennial beds. Calculate and order plants, seeds, potting soil, fertilizer, and other materials as required. Maintain quality assurance and quality control via regular maintenance operation inspections to maintain campus appearance standards within APPA Grounds Service Level Guidelines. Operate, repair, and train others on the operation, maintenance and repair of computerized irrigation systems. Mix, apply, train others, and document the application of chemicals for the Grounds Department Pest Control Program. Utilize fertilizers, pesticides, pre and post herbicides, and fungicides, in accordance with University, local, state, and federal guidelines. Mix, apply, and document the application of chemicals for the Grounds Department Pest Control Program, in accordance with the State Pesticide Use Act.
Typical Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Ornamental Horticulture or closely related field.
- Experience may substitute for education.
- Note that equivalencies are based on the following: AA = 2 years experience; BA/BS = 4 years experience; MA/MS = 6 years experience; PhD = 8 years experience
- Three years of progressively more responsible landscape maintenance experience.
- Three years of supervisory experience required. Supervisory experience in landscape maintenance preferred.
- Two years of experience in the application of horticulture chemicals.
- Knowledge and experience with APPA Grounds Service Level Guidelines preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
A State of Missouri Department of Agriculture Public Operator License for chemical spraying is required within six months of the date of hire.

Working Hours and Days : Monday - Friday 7:00 AM to 3:30PM/ On Call
