Description
The Advisor and Retention Specialist for TRIO-Student Support Service Teach (SSS-Teach) will coordinate advisement and retention efforts for participants in the SSS-Teach project. The Advisor and Retention Specialist will provide intensive academic planning, career advice, professional and graduate school information, referrals to campus agencies and community resources, student and project advocacy, and assistance to incoming transfer students eligible for the SSS-Teach project.
The SSS-Teach Advisor and Retention Specialist position is a 12-month, full time, grant-funded position.
Examples of Duties
Provide academic planning and advising services to project participants: 75%
- Serve as the advisor of record for all participants.
- Meet regularly with participants to review academic records, track degree progress, review goals, and set action plans.
- Communicate regularly with participants regarding project activities.
- Meet regularly with university faculty to monitor participants' performance in coursework.
- Provide a range of services including registration assistance, referrals to support services, guidance on academic policies, and advocacy.
- Meet regularly with peer mentors to coordinate interventions.
Assist with other elements of project: 20%
- Coordinate and assist with presenting SSS-Teach workshops.
- Collaborate with UCM's Office of Accessibility Services.
- Coordinate and collaborate with the Success Advising Center.
- Assist with selection of participants.
- Collaborate with Student Financial Services on FAFSA preparation and other financial aid services.
- Plan graduation celebrations each semester.
Provide department and university service: 5%
- Attend project, department, and university meetings, providing service to both the department and the university through committee, team, and/or council activities
Typical Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.
Experience:
- Two (2) years experience working in a higher education setting such as advising, counseling, students affairs, or academic support services required.
- Ability to identify student needs, assess challenges, and develop effective solutions and interventions to support student success and address retention barriers required.
- Experience providing academic advising or counseling to college students, including course selection, academic planning, and degree completion assistance preferred.
- Past participant or staff member of a TRIO program preferred.
- P-12 teaching experience preferred.
- Experience working with diverse student populations, including first-generation students, low-income students, and students with disabilities preferred.
- Background as first-generation or low-income student, or student with a disability preferred.
