Research Associates – Montana State University Eastern Agricultural Research Center

The Plant Pathology Program at Montana State University’s Eastern Agricultural Research Center (EARC) is seeking two Research Associates to join our collaborative agricultural research team in Sidney, Montana. Our program conducts applied research addressing crop disease management and agricultural production in the Northern Great Plains, working closely with graduate students, university researchers, agricultural professionals, and producers. These positions offer opportunities to develop scientific and professional skills while contributing to research and outreach that directly benefit Montana agriculture.

Research Associate – Field Research Program

$46,000–$50,000/year | Full-time

We are seeking an experienced field researcher to manage and conduct a diverse portfolio of applied agricultural field research projects. Responsibilities include establishing and maintaining research plots, collecting and analyzing data, supervising student and seasonal employees, supporting graduate student research, and contributing to scientific reports and manuscripts.

Master’s degree required. Hands-on agricultural field research experience, experimental design, data analysis, and R or similar statistical software experience required. Candidates should enjoy working outdoors, hands-on field research, and being part of a small collaborative research team.

Research Associate – Pulse Crop Survey Program

$46,000-$50,000/ year | Full-time

We are seeking a Research Associate to coordinate and conduct a regional pulse crop pest and disease survey program throughout Montana. Responsibilities include surveying commercial fields, identifying and documenting pests and diseases, managing field data, communicating findings with producers and agricultural professionals, and supporting applied research and outreach activities.

This position provides an opportunity to help build and shape a growing regional survey program while developing skills in applied plant pathology, integrated pest management, data management, science communication, and stakeholder engagement. This position requires extensive travel throughout the summer and attendance at regional/state stakeholder meetings.

Master’s degree in Plant Pathology or a closely related discipline required. Experience with plant disease identification, crop scouting, field research, or related agricultural work required.
