The Senior Director, Strategic and Portfolio Finance is a key leader within Vertex's Finance organization, responsible for driving strategic decision support across the enterprise portfolio and leading long-range financial planning processes. This role defines and delivers the vision for portfolio decision-making, integrating financial and non-financial metrics to enable informed trade-offs and strategic alignment. The position plays a critical role in ensuring consistent understanding of value creation, investment, and uncertainty across Vertex's portfolio.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop and implement an enterprise portfolio management framework to support strategic decision-making and prioritization.
Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to define common financial and non-financial metrics and analytical approaches for evaluating investments.
Synthesize internal and external data to deliver influential analytics that inform enterprise-level strategy.
Lead the annual Long Range Plan (LRP) process, coordinating across departments to deliver high-quality presentations for the Executive Committee and Board of Directors.
Manage and develop a team of Finance Business Partners, fostering a culture of growth, accountability, and collaboration.
Define and evolve team roles and responsibilities to meet changing business needs.
Ensure alignment of financial planning processes with organizational goals and timelines.
Champion continuous improvement initiatives across strategic finance functions.
Knowledge and Skills:
Deep understanding of pharmaceutical industry dynamics and executive-level business partnering.
Strong analytical capabilities in portfolio analysis, valuation, ROI/ROIC, and strategic financial modeling.
Proven ability to lead change in complex, cross-cultural matrix environments.
Exceptional communication and influencing skills across senior leadership and cross-functional teams.
Expertise in coordinating large-scale planning processes across time zones and systems.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and financial systems, including Hyperion.
Ability to apply broad market knowledge to drive financial performance and strategic outcomes.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline.
Typically requires 12+ years of experience in a finance leadership role, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated success in managing high-performing teams and delivering strategic financial insights.

Pay Range: $212,000 - $318,000

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
