The Director of Tour Operations manages the delivery of tours at Ashland including the tour ticket system, the daily tour schedule, management of the volunteers and weekend staff. The DTO will coordinate recruitment efforts, conduct interviews and be responsible for hiring and training volunteers. The DTO works collaboratively with staff to secure volunteers for a variety of positions at Ashland ranging from certified Docents, and museum store volunteers.
As a nonprofit organization, volunteers are an essential part of our operations. Our Docents and other volunteers are on the front line of client interaction. It is vital they are properly trained to ensure quality and mission fulfillment. It is equally important that they feel appreciated and valued.
Specific duties include:
Recruit, train and place volunteers across multiple departments.
Collaborate with the Chief Curator and Director of Interpretation & Education to train and certify Docents.
Learn and deliver Ashland tours and work with Curator and Director of Interpretation to enhance tour scripts and delivery.
Work with the Musuem Store Manager to recruit and train store volunteers.
Maintain volunteer schedules, track hours, and coordinate recognition efforts.
Plan relevant continuing education and appreciation events.
Periodic performance review and Docent evaluation annually.
Recruit, train, and schedule Weekend Managers.
Other duties include:
Work with Director of Interpretation & Education to develop specialized group tours.
Support community outreach and assist with special events at Ashland such as Living History, Lawn Party, and Jazz on the Lawn.
Encourage volunteers to participate in special events.
Point person for Fareharbor tour-booking software – responsible for accurate and up-to-date information.
Requirements
Bachelor’s degree required.
Enthusiasm for history – especially Kentucky and US history of the antebellum period.
Commitment to the Mission and values of the Henry Clay Memorial Foundation.
Must be able to stand for more than one hour and navigate stairs.
Demonstrated leadership and organizational skills.
Engaging personality capable of motivating staff.
Well organized and detail oriented.
Three years related job experience.
Excellent communication skills.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and job-related software.
