Historic Madison, Inc. (HMI) is a 501(c)3 charitable non-profit historic preservation organization founded in 1960 dedicated to education, promotion, and assistance in preservation and restoration of historic resources which protect our heritage and enhance the quality of life in Madison, Indiana. Historic Madison Foundation, Inc.(HMFI) is the non-profit supporting organization for HMI founded in 1991. HMI & HMFI share the same board of directors and officers. The organization is staffed by 3 full-time professionals and supported by 6 part-time/seasonal employees.

Organizational history
Since 1960 Historic Madison, Inc. (HMI) has worked tirelessly to preserve and save the unique and fragile historic environment that has earned Madison,Indiana its national reputation. Founded by John T. Windle and a group of preservation-minded business leaders to save the c. 1820 Jeremiah Sullivan house from demolition, HMI has grown into an award-winning organization well-known for its work throughout the United States
Signature accomplishments and awards follow:
Historic Madison, through its historic preservation leadership, has been a key stakeholder in the Historic Preservation, Economic Development & Heritage Tourism infrastructure development in Madison, IN, since 1960 through its investment of millions of dollars in historic site acquisition, preservation, restoration, and reuse.
Assisted hundreds of property owners, including government agencies, with preservation questions & concerns and leveraged millions of dollars in support of preservation.
Preservation, restoration, and reuse of 18 historic properties in our real estate portfolio, 10 of which are still owned by HMI.
Advocated for the creation of the Madison Historic District Ordinance and the successful PACE Grant program.
Spearheaded the National Historic Landmark designation for the Madison Historic District – HMI led this initiative in concert with City, County, State & Federal agencies and local property owners.
Madison was one of three original Main Street Pilot Project cities in the US. The National Trust for Historic Preservation selected HMI as the Main Street project manager. The Main Street America logo is adapted from the glazed “star brick” prevalent in Madison.
HMI was also a key driver in the creation of the local innkeepers tax and the founding of the Madison Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (DBA VisitMadison), a full-time, professionally staffed visitor center
HMI is a Section 106 Consulting Party.

Servaas Award for Organizational Excellence, awarded by Indiana Landmarks
Shrewsbury-Windle House National Historic Landmark - received the Cook Cup Award for Outstanding Restoration; & the National Preservation Award from the Victorian Society in America
Schroeder Saddletree Factory Restoration – multiple awards - National Trust for Historic Preservation, American Association for State & Local History, State of Indiana, US Department of Transportation
1850 African Methodist Episcopal Church rehabilitation – Save America’s Treasures Grant award
National Park Service - named HMI a “Partner in Preservation”, a rare & unique designation for its long-term dedication to preservation.
Notable Accomplishments / Recognition
Designation of the Madison Historic District as a National Historic Landmark. A birthplace for the Main Street movement.
