The Division of Transplant Surgery at the University of Virginia Health System is accepting applications for a two-year Abdominal Transplant Surgery Fellowship accredited through the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS) in Liver and Kidney Transplantation.

Fellowship Training

The two-year fellowship provides comprehensive clinical and operative experience in:

Liver transplantation, including deceased and living donor liver transplantation
Kidney transplantation, including deceased and living donor kidney transplantation
Pancreas transplantation
Organ procurement and deceased donor organ recovery
Living donor evaluation and donor surgery
Organ preservation and machine perfusion technologies
Pre- and post-transplant patient evaluation and management
Multidisciplinary transplant selection committees
Management of complex transplant surgical patients
Vascular and hepatobiliary surgical procedures relevant to transplantation
Transplant clinic and inpatient care
Clinical outcomes research and academic scholarship
Education and supervision of residents and medical students
The fellowship provides an academically rigorous environment with opportunities to participate in clinical research, quality improvement, national presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.

The fellowship is structured to provide progressive clinical and operative responsibility throughout the two-year training period, with the goal of preparing graduates for independent practice and academic careers in abdominal transplant surgery.

Requirements

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must:

Have successfully completed a General Surgery residency
Meet the educational requirements for certification by the American Board of Surgery or possess an appropriate foreign equivalent
Be ECFMG-certified
Be eligible for medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia
Demonstrate a strong interest and commitment to a career in abdominal transplant surgery
International medical graduates with appropriate foreign surgical training are encouraged to apply, provided they meet applicable U.S. certification and licensure requirements.
