Description
The BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Wisconsin–Madison seeks board-certified/eligible emergency medicine physicians to join our nationally recognized and rapidly growing academic faculty.
Faculty positions at the University of Wisconsin offer the opportunity to practice in a high-acuity, physician-led clinical environment while building a meaningful academic career, with clear opportunities for professional growth and advancement. We welcome candidates across all areas of emergency medicine, with particular interest at this time in candidates with experience in advanced emergency ultrasound and/or undergraduate or graduate medical education.
Clinical Environment
The BerbeeWalsh Department of Emergency Medicine provides emergency care for more than 128,000 patients each year across a broad range of clinical settings, serving as a regional resource for patients and communities throughout the Upper Midwest.
Our physicians care for medically complex patients while helping to shape clinical practice across UW Health, the integrated health system affiliated with UW–Madison. UW Health is a leader in bringing emerging technologies into clinical practice — from AI and ambient documentation to predictive analytics and decision support — to support clinicians and improve patient care safely and responsibly.
Located in central Madison, our flagship emergency department (ED) at University Hospital cares for over 70,000 adult and pediatric patients annually. The 505-bed Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and regional burn center is one of two academic medical centers in the state and a leading organ transport hospital nationally. It has been ranked Wisconsin’s No. 1 hospital by U.S. News & World Report for 15 consecutive years and serves as a major referral center for patients with complex, high-acuity illness and injury.
Faculty also practice across several distinct clinical environments. East Madison Hospital is home to a high-volume, 20-bed community ED that cares for 44,000 adult and pediatric patients annually and is designated as a Level IV Trauma Center and Acute Stroke Ready Hospital. Additional sites include the five-star William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital and the Pediatric ED at American Family Children’s Hospital, where nearly 18,000 children each year receive specialized, family-centered emergency care. The department is also the home of UW Health Med Flight, one of the few air medical services in the United States to fly with a physician on every transport.
Major expansions of the University Hospital and East Madison Hospital EDs are underway, with new clinical space scheduled to open in late 2026 and early 2027.
This breadth of practice gives faculty experience across academic referral, community, pediatric, and Veterans emergency care within a single department and health system.
Department Divisions
Our divisions and programs advance emergency care through expertise in point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), critical care, informatics and AI, pediatrics, simulation, global and social emergency medicine, and prehospital medicine.
The Ultrasound Division integrates POCUS broadly into clinical care, supported by robust quality assurance, advanced education, and active global and prehospital programs. Faculty lead highly regarded regional POCUS workshops, advance ultrasound practice and education across UW Health, and hold national leadership roles with organizations including SCUF and EUFAC.
