- Architecture/Engineering Internship
Description
We will be hiring one Youth Apprentice from either Milwaukee Public Schools or GPS Education Partners Consortium – Brown Deer School District to join our team. The internship will begin in May 2026 and end in October 2026. The student must be in their junior year of school and will be required to work a minimum of 450 hours over the term of their employment. Hours worked must be completed during normal business hours (8am-5pm). We will work with the student to confirm their availability in advance during the school year. During the summer, they will be expected to work full time to ensure they meet the minimum hour requirement. They will earn an hourly stipend of $15/hour while preparing for higher education and ultimately careers that can sustain them for a lifetime.
Requirements
The student will complete assignments focused on their specific interests while exposing them to a wide variety of professions in the design and construction industry. Hands-on practical experience is a fundamental aspect of preparing a student for a career, and we believe this is best achieved through a variety of activities with mentors representing the various disciplines in our industry:
- They will spend time shadowing various disciplines – architects / designers, building engineers, scientists, project managers, construction personnel, economists, environmental engineers, cost estimators, and business/ management (marketing, legal, financial) to learn about each discipline. This includes both virtually and in-person.
- They will shadow BIM technicians, project engineers, field engineers, and AECOM’s Digital Technology group to learn about the technological side of construction, including introductory or even advanced training in relevant software.
- After the necessary safety training, students will tour project construction sites, take photos of work in progress to compile a visual documentation of the project, and complete site observation reports.
- They will shadow Project Managers and take minutes for various meetings.
- They will spend time with trade/material vendors, and help the architects and designers update materials libraries and collections.
- They will complete First Aid Certification and Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) 10 Certification.
- They will learn how to read plans and organize a construction drawing set. They are taught to update plans for projects in construction, with RFIs and revisions to keep a current set.
- They will have access to AECOM University, which provides over 5,000 AECOM courses to explore technical topics.
Interested applicants must submit a resume and cover letter describing why they feel they should be selected for this internship to Reese Formolo at reese.formolo@aecom.com no later than May 1st. Interviews will be conducted the week of May 11th. The successful candidate will be selected by May 15th.
