Job Description:

The Department of German and Russian Studies at Binghamton University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor, beginning August 2027. The research specialization for this position is open, and candidates specializing in any aspect of Russian Studies from Early Slavic to the present are encouraged to apply. We are particularly interested in candidates with research trajectories in areas including Russian-Jewish Literature and Culture, the Literatures and Cultures of Russian-speaking Diasporas, and/or Ethnically Diverse Russian-speaking Cultures; as well as 21st-century Russian-language Literature and/or Media Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies, Environmental Humanities, and other research areas that would complement existing departmental and interdisciplinary research communities at Binghamton.

The successful applicant will successfully teach the Russian language and core courses in Russian-language culture, be able to offer new undergraduate courses within their research area, and imaginatively contribute to undergraduate outreach, curricular development, and program growth. We enthusiastically invite applications from those at the ABD level as well as advanced Assistant or early Associate rank. Applicants at the Associate level should further demonstrate capacity for program leadership.

The successful candidate will be part of the core faculty of the Russian Program, home to the only formalized undergraduate Russian Major in the State University of New York, the largest public university system in the state. Opportunities for growth include participation in the interdisciplinary Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies Program, teaching in the East European Studies Minor, and collaborating with campus colleagues teaching in 17 language programs, the most languages taught at any single campus in the SUNY system. They will also join a university-wide intellectual cohort of recent strategic hires in a broad range of emerging fields in the humanities, among which Russian-speaking diasporas broadly understood would be of great interest. This position is represented by UUP, the largest higher education union in the country, which has recently secured a five-year contract with historic gains, including very strong annual raises and job protections around AI.

Requirements:

Required Qualifications

1. PhD in Slavic Languages and Literatures or related field by August 16, 2027

2. Native or near-native proficiency in English and Russian

3. Evidence of a strong research agenda

4. Experience teaching Russian language at the college level

Preferred Qualifications

1. Evidence of research productivity in Russian-Jewish Literature and Culture, the Literatures and Cultures of Russian-speaking Diasporas, Ethnically-diverse Russian-speaking Cultures, or a related sub-field.
