is recruiting for an Assistant/Associate Program Director

The Mount Sinai Hospital-Elmhurst Hospital Center Residency in Emergency Medicine is excited to announce that we are recruiting for an Assistant Program Director to join our strong, close-knit leadership team of a PD and 6 APDs.  

We lead a 4-year program with 18 residents per class. Additionally, our department started the first-ever 5-year Residency in Emergency Medicine-Critical Care, and these 2 residents per year train as part of our program for the first 3.5 years (and remain in the family even after that). Our program offers a well-balanced mix of high-acuity, high-volume clinical sites and augments the clinical education with strong didactics and career development. 

Our large team structure and well-resourced, supportive department allow our APDs to specialize and develop unusual depth of expertise in the areas of medical education to which they are most drawn.There is plenty of room for growth, creativity and leadership development.  

We seek candidates with a demonstrated record of interest and innovation in medical education. We value, but do not require, previous experience as an APD or clerkship director, advanced training in medical education, and records of national involvement and scholarship.

Our residency splits clinical time evenly between 2 clinical sites: The Mount Sinai Hospital and Elmhurst Hospital Center. The Mount Sinai Hospital is an internationally-recognized quaternary care flagship hospital of a large hospital system. The emergency department sees over 100K patient visits per year of very high acuity, drawing patients from Harlem, Spanish Harlem and the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The adult and pediatric EDs underwent a 5-year renovation completed in 2025 including a new separate 28-bed observation unit. Dr. Brendan Carr, an emergency physician and our immediate past Chair, leads the entire Mount Sinai Health System.  Our departmental office area includes a full floor for the education teams, including newly renovated offices and a resident room. 

Elmhurst Hospital Center is a large, public, Level 1 trauma center in Jackson Heights, Queens that is fully staffed by Sinai faculty and also sees over 100K visits per year including many of very high acuity. The Sinai-Elmhurst partnership has existed since the 1960's and is central to the residency’s identity, with some residency faculty working at both sites. EHC’s unique patient population represents its location in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country, home to immigrants from around the world. The dedicated faculty and staff create a sought-after practice environment.
