- Communications Director
Description
About the Campaign
Campaign for U.S. Congress in Minnesota's 1st Congressional District as a progressive Democratic (DFL) primary candidate. The campaign is built around a bold policy platform and an engaging story of MN-01 that anchors our earned-media and video storytelling. We move fast, ship real deliverables, and hold a high bar for accuracy.
Role Summary
The Communications Director owns the campaign's voice across every channel and keeps all messaging accurate, on-brand, and on-schedule. You'll be the connective tissue between the candidate, outside vendors, and volunteers — translating campaign priorities into a coordinated stream of mail, digital, press, and video content. This is a hands-on role: you'll manage people and partners, but you'll also draft, edit, and ship.
Key Responsibilities
Communications Strategy & Scheduling
Build and maintain a master communications calendar coordinating press, email, social, paid digital, direct mail, and video releases.
Set messaging priorities week to week and ensure every channel reinforces a consistent narrative through the August 11 primary.
Track deadlines, lead times, and dependencies across vendors so nothing slips.
Vendor & Partner Management
Serve as primary point of contact for the graphic designer, print shop, mail house, and paid digital media consultant.
Manage production timelines for direct mail — coordinating design, copy, proofs, and drop dates with the mail house.
Brief vendors clearly, review proofs, and hold partners to budget and schedule.
Press & Media Relations
Draft press releases, media advisories, statements, and op-eds.
Build and maintain a press contact list across MN-01 markets; pitch reporters and respond to inquiries.
Help maximize earned media around campaign milestones, including the 277-mile walk.
Content & Digital
Write and edit copy for email, social, web, and ads in the candidate's voice.
Coordinate the video series — scheduling, scripting support, and release planning — with the candidate and freelance editor.
Work with the paid digital media consultant on ad creative, targeting input, and flight scheduling.
Volunteer Coordination
Equip volunteers with messaging guidance, talking points, and shareable content.
Support volunteer-driven communications activity so it stays on-message and on-brand.
Compliance Responsibilities
All public-facing communications must meet FEC and platform requirements. The Communications Director is expected to: ensure proper paid-for disclaimers on all paid placements; secure signed releases before using constituent footage or likeness in paid media; route any cell-phone outreach through compliant peer-to-peer platforms; and maintain a high standard of factual accuracy so every claim survives opponent and fact-checker scrutiny.
Requirements
What We're Looking For
3+ years in political, advocacy, communications, or campaign roles (cycle experience a strong plus).
Excellent writer and editor who can match a defined voice and turn copy around fast.
Proven project manager who can juggle multiple vendors and deadlines without dropping threads.
Comfort with digital tools — email/CRM platforms, social, basic analytics, and ad platforms.
Working knowledge of FEC disclaimer rules and campaign compliance, or the ability to get up to speed quickly.
Self-directed and reliable in a fully remote, fast-moving environment.
