Lead the Next Chapter of Oakland County’s Story
The Oakland County Historical Society is seeking a driven and community-focused Executive Director to guide the organization into its next phase of growth.
As a member-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit, the Oakland County Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history of Oakland County and operating the Oakland History Center for the education and benefit of the community. This is an opportunity for a leader who values local impact, community partnerships, and mission-driven work.
About the Role
The Executive Director serves as the chief staff leader of the Oakland County Historical Society and works closely with the Board of Directors to ensure operational strength, financial stability, donor engagement, and community visibility.
This position combines external relationship-building with practical, hands-on nonprofit leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and maintain partnerships with local organizations, municipalities, schools, and community groups
Strengthen relationships with current donors and members while actively identifying and cultivating new supporters
Collaborate with the Board of Directors to ensure effective governance and strategic alignment
Prepare and present clear financial reports to the Board (QuickBooks experience preferred)
Oversee day-to-day operations of the organization and the Oakland History Center
Lead hiring, onboarding, and supervision of staff and coordination of volunteers
Qualifications
Experience leading or managing a nonprofit organization (experience with 100+ members preferred)
Proven ability to build community partnerships and external relationships
Comfort working collaboratively with a Board of Directors
Financial literacy and experience producing Board-level financial reports
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience
Experience within a historical society, museum, cultural institution, or community-based nonprofit is a plus.
