Lead the Future of Behavioral Health in Mid-Michigan
University of Michigan Health–Sparrow is seeking a dynamic, board-certified psychiatrist to serve as the Medical Director of Behavioral Health Services. This is a unique opportunity to lead a growing behavioral health service line while helping shape the future of psychiatric care across Mid-Michigan.
As Medical Director, you will partner with physician and administrative leadership to advance clinical excellence, expand access to care, and help guide the development of one of Michigan's newest behavioral health hospitals.
Behavioral Health Services at University of Michigan Health–Sparrow are being developed in strategic partnership with Sheppard Pratt, one of the nation's most respected behavioral healthcare organizations. This collaboration brings together the academic strength and innovation of University of Michigan Health with Sheppard Pratt's nationally recognized expertise in behavioral health care, creating an exceptional environment for clinical leadership, program development, and innovation.
Today, University of Michigan Health–Sparrow provides adult and geriatric inpatient programs supported by partial hospitalization, day treatment, and outpatient behavioral health services.
In 2028, UM Health–Sparrow will open a new 64-bed Behavioral Health Hospital, expanding adult and geriatric services while introducing child and adolescent inpatient psychiatry for the first time in the Lansing region. This position offers the rare opportunity to help build a new hospital, influence program development, recruit future physician leaders, and establish the clinical culture of a growing regional behavioral health system.

Position Highlights
- 70% clinical / 30% protected administrative time
- Hospital-employed position
- Clinical oversight of adult and geriatric inpatient behavioral health, partial hospitalization, and day treatment services
- Epic electronic medical record
- Shared call schedule of 1:4 weekends with limited weekday call responsibilities
As Medical Director, You Will
- Provide physician leadership across inpatient and outpatient behavioral health services
- Promote clinical excellence, patient safety, and quality improvement initiatives
- Partner with executive leadership on strategic planning, service expansion, and operational priorities
- Collaborate with physician and operational leaders from University of Michigan Health and Sheppard Pratt to advance clinical programs and service line growth
- Lead physician engagement and foster a collaborative, high-performing clinical culture
- Participate in physician recruitment, mentoring, performance evaluations, and professional development
- Support peer review and medical staff quality activities
- Help shape new clinical programs and operational planning for the 2028 Behavioral Health Hospital
Qualifications
- Board Certified in Psychiatry
- Eligible for medical licensure in the State of Michigan
- Minimum of five years of clinical psychiatry experience
- Prior physician leadership experience preferred
- Demonstrated commitment to quality, collaboration, and patient-centered care
