- Tenure-Track Assistant Professor Specializing in the Study of Early Christianity

The Department of Classical and Religious Studies at Vanderbilt University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in the study of early Christianity, beginning Fall 2027. We are interested in candidates with the ability to work across texts and traditions, including the traditions of Eastern Orthodoxy. We are open to candidates using innovative computational methods in the study of ancient texts.
Qualifications
In addition to outstanding scholarly potential, successful candidates will demonstrate their ability to contribute to undergraduate teaching in religious studies—including undergraduate courses on Christianity, the New Testament, theories and methods in the study of religion, and other departmental curricular needs. The successful candidate will also contribute to the Arts & Science Core curriculum and the Graduate Department of Religion.

Applicants should have Ph.D. in hand no later than August 1, 2027. Applications should be submitted through Interfolio (at https://apply.interfolio.com/194830) and include: a cover letter that discusses current and future research; CV; writing sample (25–30 pages); statement of teaching philosophy; evidence of teaching effectiveness (including recent teaching evaluations); and the names and contact details of three recommenders. Letters of recommendation will be solicited for short-listed candidates. Review of applications will begin November 15.
